An Arts & Crafts style bungalow. The Sorenson residence, located at the 4000
foot level of Kilauea mountain on the Island of Hawaii, is designed to capitalize
on the best of the region and mitigate the sometimes chilly climate.
Designed in the Arts & Crafts style, the home features extensive Redwood details
and trim in a compact 1800 square foot, two bedroom home.
|
Approached on a wooden ramp through the tropical garden, the low, spreading roof of
the Tea House belies it's perch on the cliff over the stream.
|
A large, heat circulating fireplace, centers the living room, with curio cabinets on
either side. Custom etched and leaded glass doors for these were crafted in the
Architect's studios.
|
The main house is set overlooking the lawns, gardens and orchard near the center of
the three acre site. The dramatic cantelevered roof protects the front lanai and
gives the structure the feeling of flight.
|
The hub of the home is the large, screened lanai which overlooks the site and stream
beyond. Tile floor surfaces and sunroom furniture are a relaxed contrast to the more
formal living room at the core of the home. Screening protects from insects, but
becomes an invisible layer in this application.
|
The Lanai overlooks a pond where pumps circulate water and which is kept filled by
rainwater directed off the roof on the hanging chains.
