HISTORIC RESTORATION PROJECTS
Since 1977 we have undertaken numerous challenging historic restoration and rehabilitation.
Projects noted * are National Historic Landmarks
1877 Volcano House Hotel - (*) Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Involved major restoration of the first hotel in the area to be used as an
art gallery and teaching center. Awarded 1978 Hawaii Preservation Citation.
1912 S. Hata Building - (*) Hilo, Hawaii
Complete reconstruction of the first concrete building in the community.
Abandoned for a decade and condemmed by the County, the project met required
Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit standards and recieved several preservation
awards.
Haile House Inn - Hilo, Hawaii.
Project involved restoration of a 1912
Arts & Crafts residence as an eight room Bed and Breakfast Inn.
President Cleveland Building -Hilo, Hawaii.
Involved extensive restoration of a 1921 wood framed commercial building.
Volcano Block Building - (*) Hilo, Hawaii.
Project involved major seismic retrofitting of a 1914 building and re-configuration
of the interior for commercial tennants. Recieved the 1994 Hawaii Preservation Award.
Palace Theatre - (*) Hilo, Hawaii.
Project involved preparation of measured drawings of this 1916 theatre, seismic
retrofit of the structural system, and extensive interior restoration.
Project recieved the 1995 Hawaii Preservation Award and Honorable Mention in
the National Landmarks Restoration Program.
Hilo Masonic Hall - (*) Hilo, Hawaii.
Project involved seismic retrofitting, installation of elevators and new electrical
system and rehabilitation of the historic interior for commercial uses.
Kilohana House - (*) Puhi, Kauai.
Project involved repairs and restoration to a 1936 Landmark home now in use as shops
and resturants. Extensive damage was suffered during Hurricane Iniki (1993) which
impacted the entire structure. Recipient of two Hawaii State Historic Preservation Awards, 1994.
Kilohana House - (*) Puhi, Kauai.
Project involved complete reconstruction of a 1910 structure which was totally destroyed
by Hurricane Iniki. Forensic architecture was involved to re-create drawings for reconstruction.
Seto's Market - Hanapepe, Kauai.
Project involved complete reconstruction of this 1918 commercial building following
it's total destruction by Hurricane Iniki. Location over the Hanapepe River presented
difficult building code and US Army Corps of Engineers issues. Recipient of the 1994
Kauai Preservation Award.
Hong Min Hee Building - Waimea, Kauai.
Project involved replacement of a 1954 structure, destroyed by Hurricane Iniki,
with a newly designed "infill" structure that fit in with the ajacent historic
buildings.
Haraguchi Rice Mill - (*) Hanalei, Kauai.
This Landmark building, built in 1889, was the last remaining rice processing facility
in Hawaii and was totally destroyed by Hurricane Iniki. Working from the debris and
historic photograhs, drawings were created to reconstruct the building.
Kilauea Lodge & Resturant - Volcano, Hawaii.
Project involved rehabilitation and addaptation of a 1929 Girl Scout facility for use
as a Bed and Breakfast Inn and Resturant. Recieved the Hawaii Island Preservation Award, 1996.
Later activity involved design and construction of a second, nine room structure to
compliment the historic building.
Kilauea Military Rest Camp - (*), Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Island of Hawaii.
Project involves restoration and rehabilitation of 26 historic structures built between
1919 and 1943, including guest cabins, main lodge building, and resturant.
Completion scheduled for October, 2000.
